On the corner of Xiandai Avenue sits Zhongtian Hupan, or as we call it: Little Korea. The whole complex is rife with Korean restaurants, cafes, groceries, pool halls, and bars; all with their signage in Korean. It’s impossible to go there without bumping into someone from Korea. That is doubly true late at night. As far as the ladies go, you can spot them by their straight black ponytails shoved through the back of their baseball caps. Think of it as Shiquan Jie for Koreans. Anyway, last month we got a hankering for Korean food after visiting the Korean food pavilion at Dulwich College’s International Day.
Shin Sollo has been in Little Korea since the place was built, and of all the different restaurants to choose from, we like this one the best. We’ve been told by a Korean friend that Shin Sollo should actually be Romanized as Shin Sul Ro. That’s Korean for hotpot. However, he also claims that his country’s name should be written in English as Corea so that the alphabetical order puts it in front of Japan. Regardless, this place serves more than hotpot. Bibimbap and Boolgogi or any other Korean food that you can mispronounce or we can misspell, are also on the menu. Don’t worry about ordering. Everything has its own picture.
The place is often too crowded on a Saturday, but on Sunday most Koreans are in church so it’s not too busy. The inside is well worn and the prices are cheap. Four people can share a hotpot for 120 RMB. Korean hotpot begins with nothing more than saltwater. Vegetables and meat are cooked first. You can wrap up the meat in a lettuce leaf after dipping it in some sesame or biting vinegar-soy dip. It also comes with wasabi, bowls of garlic, and hot pepper. Bring some gum. By the time you’re half finished with your meat and vegetables, the salt water will become a deep brown broth. Sides of kimchi, mackerel, egg, and whatever happens to be in season are included for free.
